do I refund Shipping cost?

I sell FBM and i charge shipping for one of my items.

Customer failed to pick up the item from the post office and now the item is being returned back to me. Customer says they "forgot" to pick up the item.

Do I refund the original shipping cost when i do receive the item back?

No, because the post office is going to charge you for return shipping. You should charge the customer a 20% restocking fee to try and cover it.

We have returns made by customers that refused to pick up an order, made an error, changed their mind etc weekly. We deduct double (because we get charged for return shipping too) our actual shipping cost (not the cost we charge the customer) to send the parcel and get very few bad reviews from it. Try returning an item you bought directly from Amazon and select "found better price" "changed my mind" and I think one other option and you will get a waybill from them with a significant cost associated to it. I tried to return a printer once because I changed my mind. They wanted to charge me $50 for the waybill. I could have returned it with UPS for about $15. What a scam. I do think the customer should be responsible for their own mistakes, why shuold we? As long as we are fair (take a hint Amazon) with the actual shipping costs.

It is 50/50 some customers will complain leave negative feed back etc, we ship all with Canada Post, Amazon says put tracking #, not good enough with tracking #, we put signature on for items, people do not pick up from Post Office. Items get returned back to us. The best one we love to get is, i didn't get picture of item that was delivered with my other amazon orders.

Amazon will says deduct shipping and restocking fee, however, when you speak with them about it, when they leave negative feedback, they will be leaning to suggest that you should have refunded the customer everything and give them more money, as it is your mistake that they didn't pick up the parcel from Post Office.

It is Catch 22, you pick and choose battles. If your account is in good standing, you can play the game, however, each complain and negative feedback, will drop your account health.

had this happen, small $10 item, they wanted to return because they changed their mind. I don't make any profit on shipping, i agreed to refund the item but they had to pay the shipping ( $17 ) plus the return shipping... for me that was the end of it.. maybe of my few wins since i been selling on Amazon

No. It is not your fault the customer failed to pick up the item and the shipping cost you. I'm not in favor of the restocking fee. But I wouldn't refund the shipping.
