Amazon paying out on a A-z Claim still feels like a loss.
"We have covered the cost of the refund and have not counted the claim against your Order Defect Rate."
A CRIME was still committed and Amazon rewarded the customer with free goods and their money back.
Amazon is enabling fraudulent activity on it's platform and turns around and treats their seller's like criminals.

I've reread this post and wondering if there a question?
Once a customer is refunded through A to Z, the customer can't be retroactively recharged without permission from the customer, so that's how they have to do it. They have eaten the cost of the refund. They have obviously done a cost benefit analysis of auto approving a to z claims vs hiring the staff and paying them to look at them all.
They do track these customers who return too much stuff and file too many claims.
There are customers who have abused it too much and do eventually get banned from purchasing on Amazon.
But it didn't affect your order defect rate and you didn't cover the cost, so that is the best case scenario, and it still worked out cheaper for Amazon to do it that way than to pay someone to look at all the claims in person.

I had this same issue recently. The customer opened a return claiming the headlight was defective. Once received I realized the customer swapped out the unit and replace it with an old unit. I messaged the customer and made them aware that I wont be refunding them until they returned the original unit. They never replied then opened an AZ 2 days later. Amazon decided to absorbed the cost and I won the AZ but still this shouldn't have happened. They are allowing these crooks to continously do this on the platform. The is considered as a scam btw!

Hey at least you're lucky and Amazon refunded you. I get nothing and even get dinged in my metrics.
Refund scams r skyrocketing and now there's Tic Tok videos coaching viewers on how to conduct scams. There are even now some business whose sole function is to aid customers in getting refunds for a cut. Google it! Some news articles explaining rampant refund abuse as well.
Amazon is completely aware of this and allow it to happen to third party sellers.
Over the past 2 years the amount of my claims have dramatically increased and Amazon still counts them as defects against me.
Complete scam and Amazon knows it because it has been happening to them for years and it's expanding because of Tic Tok influencers and Amazon not doing anything to penalize crooks.
I'm slowly winding down my business because of this and will eventually quit. No longer worth the hassle. Just working and not getting paid is not appealing.

Dear Amazon support, I won an appeal for an A-Z claim but still have not received my money back from you after you prematurely refunded the customer and took the funds back from me. My case has been open for 3 weeks with no answer. Please get back to me about this case 14929513361
