How Do You Get a "Reference Price" for Existing Asins?

Can Amazon please clarify this?

1. When I create a coupon that once applied reduces the price of a product to one that is less than we have ever sold said asin for before, how come we are getting the "no reference price" error?

2. How come newly listed products (asins) are working with coupons when said products wouldn't have a "reference price" compared to products that have a history and have been sold many times before? Per the new coupon requirements, it actually states that new products would not be applicable.

3. How does an existing asin with a history of sales receive a "reference price?"

4. Without clarification, are sellers who want to offer coupons supposed to just keep guessing and altering pricing....coupon discount amounts and than just wait for hours up to 2 days until seeing if that combination works before trying again?

5. If you create say a coupon discount for 10 items, and they all become suppressed, they will just become unsuppressed at some point when a "reference price" is established? Is the "reference price" established from a start date of March 12th and after the new policy came in place?

It would really help if we could take away all the vagueness of these changes, as we as sellers could than make the correct changes to make things work. The whack a mole trial and error of combination changes in price and discount.....and than waiting to see if said combination works is really frustrating and time consuming. Thank you.

Reference price is only accepted if the bot can find a sales history at that price in the last 3 months (or 6?). Meaning not listed at that price, but having had sales at that price

Good questions! I'm also curious about where I can find the 'Was Price' for my ASINs. @SEAmod

A Was Price is automatically computed and changes over time. The Was Price is determined using the 90-day median price paid by customers for the product on Amazon.. We exclude prices paid by customers for the product during a limited time deal.

Hi @Seller_BYn3ICHDweKIc,

Tatiana from Amazon here. I wanted to help answer a few of your questions and provide more information regarding reference prices:

A couple of things to remember here:

  1. Providing a List Price can help provide a reference price for your ASINs. If your ASINs don't currently have a List Price that could be the issue.
  2. Coupons also now require the coupon discount beat the most recent lowest selling price, and that price could include the selling price during other promotions such as dollar off promotions or prime exclusive discounts.

These new ASINs may have a List Price where the older ASINs may not. As stated above, be sure you have included a list price for all ASINs.

We do try review coupon creation requests as quickly as possible, but it is the seller's responsibility to ensure they are also tracking their historical prices.

Yes, once a product meets the coupon requirements, the product should be eligible for coupons the following day. March 12th is only the date of this new policy change. The reference price history will be different for each ASIN and will depend on historical pricing, and the List Price provided.
