GST HST PST for Selling on Amazon Canada

Hi,

I am a new seller on Amazon.ca. I am already registered for GST/HST but not for PST in the 4 provinces (BC, Sask, Manitoba, Quebec).

I was trying to setup my seller central in a way that Amazon can collect GST/HST on my behalf. However, it also asks me if I want to collect PST. Now I am not currently registered for PST in any of the provinces. Am I still obligated to register for and collect PST right away or can one wait till reaching the minimum limit for each of the provinces is hit?

Please help, thanks in advance!

best to ask a licensed accountant. They will know the laws regarding tax nation wide.
As far as I know , Having an Ontario registered number is good enough as all the taxes are paid in Ontario. calculations will be done based on where the purchaser/buyer lives.

If you have a GST/HST registration, you are obligated to collect those taxes for every province/territory. However, PST is not required if you do not have a physical business presence in the other provinces. Set your tax settings to GST/HST for every province, and leave PST unchecked for those provinces that collect PST. Do not forget to check each of your listings to ensure you have the appropriate tax code set for that item. Any items where tax is not charging is because you have not set the tax code on the item correctly. You are still responsible to pay the appropriate GST/HST for that order based on the destination tax rate, so set up your items carefully or it will cost you between 5-15% percent of your sale.

If you live in one of the 4 provinces that have PST/QST/RST then you should contact those provinces directly. If you live outside of those provinces then you don’t have to register and collect the P/Q/RST unless you target those provinces or have items in the BC FBA warehouses. Your customers need to self submit their taxes if you don’t register. Quebec just announced changes that take effect in 2019 so you’ll need to check back on that as the time approaches.

Thanks for your inputs,

Does this mean I can collect GST / HST in all provinces, and it’s fine if I don’t collect PST as long as I don’t store any product in BC FBA warehouse?

Hi there,

You are not required at this moment as long as you don’t solicit and advertise sales towards that province. Also if you don’t have warehouse in or ship from FBA warehouse located in their province. However if you want you can register by contacting each province separately. This rules can change anytime and suggest to consult with good accountant.

Kind regards

Yes, I do have volume of sales towards each province including Quebec however I will disagree on this one.
I do not run Amazon ads targeting that provinces, and don’t agree that Amazon advertises my product, it depends how you interpret that.
There is a new law coming out for Quebec and there is another topic on that subject on this forum regarding Quebec and QST. This will maybe pass to be mandatory in 2019.

Hi,

New selling in Amazon.ca and I just got GST/HST number. Just wanted to confirm that if you want Amazon to collect sales tax on your behalf, I went to account info and clicked on Tax settings. There it just asked me for basic info for a W-8BEN-E form which is US based. And that was it. No asking of GST/HST number or anything about sales. Is that how its suppose to be?

Thanks for your help!

Hi,

If I click on Settings it actually only shows account info, notification, login settings, return settings, shipment settings, your info and FBA. There is no Tax settings. From the information I read is the reason could be because its not a professional account. It can be done through a professional account only. I’m just trying to see if there are other approaches that could be done.

Thanks again!
