I am a newbie and need help with shipping costs and labels

I set up my first sku and sold it. However it only charged $5 for shipping and promised it to the client within 5 days. I was unable to buy the shipping from Amazon and was forced to go to Canada Post, where it cost me $15 to ship it. So I lost $10 and made no money on the sale.

I applied for the dangerous goods FBA program but was told that I am on a waitlist...indefinitely. So I need to figure this out to ship these by myself

I learned that I can change the shipping costs on the template, however I have been unable to get help from Amazon on how to deal with this going forward. The customer service has been atrocious.

The product is a 150ml aerosol can, selling for $25

I now have 60 cans available, but I don't know how to go about shipping these without losing money. Can I not buy and print a shipping label from the Amazon site, using Amazon's shipping rates with Canada Post? Or am I to go to Canada Post to buy and print a shipping label based on their rates?

Is there a cost effective packing that people use to ship smaller items? Do I need to get a tracking number or send them basic post and hope I don't get too many people saying they never received the product?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, thank you

You weren't forced to go to Canada Post, you could have went to UPS, Purolator, Loomis, DHL, Fedex etc, any other Amazon integrated tracking approved carrier.

Yea, FBA Hazmat in Canada is about an 11 year wait. All current approved hazmat sellers had their storage space slashed by 10x last fall. Gotta wait for them to continue building new warehouses.

You will have to raise the price or negotiate a better wholesale cost from your distributor. Alternatively you could register a commercial account through Canada Post and other carriers for your business.

Buy shipping is not available in Canada, Amazon does not have subsidized rates in Canada for sellers with Canada Post or any other carrier for seller fulfilled orders. Even if they did, you wouldn't be able to use it for hazmat/dangerous goods as per federal law, you (the shipper) has to pay for and take responsibility for the shipment and declare it as such due to it being dangerous goods.

You won't be able to send anything over 2cm thick basic untracked letter post in Canada. Anything with a over 2cm thick dimension needs to be sent at least by Regular Parcel post, which includes a tracking number.

Hi there, if you are a registered business you can open a business account with Canada Post and receive some discounts. In addition to that, I use Stallion Express, which can be linked to your amazon account. They have some of the best shipping prices. Hope this helps.

You should change your shipping template. I would recommend 2 days handling time, and 6 to 8 days shipping time. Places like PEI might take longer (depending where you are located). Use stallion express or chitchat to ship your products. With Stallion express your shipping cost will range between CAD$8 to $16 (average CAD$13) depending where you are located and where you are shipping to. Both Stallion express and chitchats work with different carriers and have cheaper option, but make sure to select Canada Post for a valid tracking#.

Regarding DG/hazmat items, Canada Post policy is that they do not accept any items considered Dangerous Goods as per TDG regulations except for lithium batteries. They may allow limited or excepted quantities but you need to contact your Canada Post sales rep first to work all that out before shipping. Other couriers like Purolator typically charge a surcharge for DG items even if they qualify as limited or excepted quantities.

So as JPart2 alluded to, you need to work out your costs and shipping to set your prices accordingly.

You, as the shipper, are ultimately held responsible.

Amazon creates a default shipping template for you when you sign up for an account called Migrated Template. You can created your own custom shipping template and assign it to any items you list. Go to your inventory page and on your item you have listed click on Migrated Template. This should bring you to the Shipping Settings where you can create a new Shipping Template. Hope this helps and good luck.
