If you refund an order, and later find the reason was fraudulent, do you have any recourse?

I made the mistake refunding a $119 order, scanned delivered, that the customer claims never arrived.

Today, I finally found out from the post office the item was retrieved with photo ID. I had to refund the order prior to learning this as it took 6 days to get this proof of delivery, and I would have been vulnerable to an AZ claim, since Canadians can not use Amazon Shipping.

What can I do here?

You could report to to the RCMP online anti fraud department

I'm afraid there's nothing you can do. There is no way for you or Amazon to re-charge the customer that amount. If there would have been an A-to-Z claim, you could have appealed the decision and depending on delivery proof they could have reversed the decision and give your money back. I've heard that only a signature proof of delivery could reverse an A-to-Z, not sure if a photo ID would.

Which carrier did you use?

I use Canada Post (predominantly), and if this happened to me I would CALL IT IN and try to claim insurance for 'lost package', letting CP know what the customer is claiming.

I guarantee you that CP would investigate it, by calling the customer to begin with. That could scare the heck of the scammer. If that happens, s/he can then call Amazon to ensure you get your money back...
