is there any recourse when a buyer is granted an fba return and then returns some trash item in the box that used to contain my product? i have had this happen twice recently

Yup, you just file an FBA returns reimbursement. As per Amazon policy, the customer actually has to return the item they purchased in full.
Amazon however is not responsible for customer damaged returns, but if there is a swaparoo, you do get reimbursed.

This has happened to me a few times. I recently got a leaf blower as a return for a sticker I sold. Funny.
