Out of stock items show up for sale

So I had to cancel an order last year because It was no longer in stock. seemed odd, but i figured maybe I sold it elsewhere and forgot to remove it, or maybe I missed a duplicate listing, so I went through my inventory to make sure everything listed on amazon was still in stock. And it was.

But this year 1 month ago someone bought a book that was sold out in 2020 and I had to apologize for what amazon did. My listings have been on vacation setting this month and was just checking my inventory for when I reactivate it in Aug, and I found 3 books sold out from last year now had 1 in stock of each, the restocking date was 7.21.23 meaning someone changed the inventory from 0 to 1 and It wasn't me. At least 5 instances of this in 1 year.

Pretty sure my account isn't being hacked, has this happened to you? does this happen very often?

edit- just now deleted another product for sale that was sold last year.

Do you use any third-party programs with your Amazon account?

Every once in a while we'd find listing with inventory sync issue on Amazon, shows zero inventory on our end but shows in stock with random wrong inventory qty on product page.

When we find them usually we just delete the listing, nothing else can fix it.

Amazon has had 'ghost' listing claims for years and they deny that it ever happens.

I prefer to call them zombies.

One of the working theories from the 'old timers' that are not here any longer was that this happened when Amazon did an update and some really OLD files got included in the data dump.

I've had it happen but MOST of mine have been products that I can get an overnight delivery from my supplier. I do orders several times a week so I just add the missing item in and ship it out when it gets here.

I have my shipping settings set to 'slow' so I have an extra day!

The best practices says to delete the items that are sold out and you won't restock immediately. PLEASE don't ask how many I would have to go through in my inventory...................🤣🤣🤣🤣
