Does Shipping need a tracking Number?

Hi,

I’m really new to this and I have some old books I want to sell. I had several questions related to shipping.

  1. Is a bubble-wrapped lined envelope enough protection for bigger books/textbooks? Or is it best to bubble wrap them with extra bubble wrap?

  2. Can I ship an item using just a stamp (for smaller books)? Or must there be a tracking number to ship items bought on amazon?

Any other tips or tricks for a newbie?

Thank you!

Anything that you are not willing to just give away should have a tracking number. If you can not track it, the customer can just state they never received it. Tracking is not as good of evidence as a signature, but it can help. Also, in the US, there is an expectation for a high percentage of orders with tracking. That may come to Canada, so pay close attention to the Seller Central headlines or you may get surprised by warnings or suspension.

Bubblewrap is not as good as some cardboard to absorb the shock from damage. Both are better. Be prepared to spend some money to protect items that are worth some money,

Tracking is not required for amazon.ca

But a book package thicker than 2cm (.75 inches) will have tracking included from Canada Post since the book will have to go as a parcel in Canada.

The only untracked service in Canada is oversize lettermail (max of 500g and max of 2 cm thick), which only works for thin books. Cost for 500g is currently $5.05+tax anywhere in Canada. I use it a lot for dvds and cds, but rarely for books.

If you have not already done so, sign up for the free Canada Post Solutions for Small Business membership. This will give you some savings when shipping and allow you to use Expedited Parcel when shipping.
