Hazardous and prohibited items

Important: If you supply products for sale on Amazon, you must comply with all federal, provincial, and local laws and Amazon policies applicable to those products and product listings.

Examples of permitted hazardous listings

If listing a permitted but hazardous item, sellers must ensure that they are shipping the item in compliance with Department of Transportation requirements and applicable laws.

  • Batteries that do not contain mercury
  • Rechargeable batteries
  • Empty portable gas cans that comply with applicable standards
  • Low-powered laser remotes which typically incorporate a laser “pointer” for the purpose of controlling visual aids (such as slide decks) in group presentations

Examples of prohibited listings

  • Polycarbonate baby bottles that contain bisphenol A (BPA)
  • Items containing carbon tetrachloride, such as:
    • Fire extinguishers
    • Refrigerants
    • Cleaning agents
  • Portable fire pots that do not comply with ASTM F3363-19 - Standard Specification for Unvented Liquid/Gel Fuel-Burning Portable Devices
  • Containers of pourable alcohol-based fuels that do not comply with ASTM F3429 / F3429M – 20 Standard Specification for Performance of Flame Mitigation Devices Installed in Disposable and Pre-Filled Flammable Liquid Containers
  • Disposable flammable liquid fuel containers that do not comply with ASTM F3429 / F3429M – 20 Standard Specification for Performance of Flame Mitigation Devices Installed in Disposable and Pre-Filled Flammable Liquid Containers
  • Explosives, such as:
    • Black powder
    • Caps for toy guns
    • Explosive fuses
    • Exploding rifle targets
    • Fireworks, such as:
      • Firecrackers
      • Firework kits
      • Aerial bombs
      • Bottle rockets
      • Party poppers
      • Roman candles
      • Smoke bombs
      • Snap caps
      • Sparklers
    • Flares, such as projectile and road flares
    • Flash paper
    • Gasoline
  • Information on how to make explosive devices, such as bombs
  • Kite strings that are intended for kite fighting
  • Sky lanterns or floating or flying lanterns
  • Corded window coverings, such as corded window blinds and shades
  • Products containing red phosphorous
  • Products containing thermite
  • Used oil, such as cooking oil or motor oil
  • Batteries containing mercury
  • Water walking balls
  • Products contaminated by radiation
  • Products containing mercury
  • Products containing cyanide
  • Non-toy magnets marketed to children
  • Individual magnets, novelty magnets and novelty magnet sets that are marketed or commonly used for entertainment, such as puzzle working, sculpture building, mental stimulation or stress relief are prohibited for sale. The following magnet set brands are specifically prohibited for sale:
    • Buckyballs
    • Buck balls
    • Buckybars
    • Bucky Bigs
    • Buckycubes
    • CyberCube
    • Dynocube
    • Hurry Harris balls
    • Magnicube (also called ‘Mag Cube’)
    • Neocubes
    • Neocubix
    • Nanodots
    • Neo spheres
    • Puzzle Spheres (ONLY if they are magnets or magnetic)
    • Zen magnets set
  • Refrigerants in household appliances, such as Freon
  • Jequirity beans or any substance or article that is made from or that includes jequirity beans in whole or in part
  • Kites, any part of which is made of uninsulated metal and whose dimensions do not comply with legal standards
  • Kite strings made of a material that conducts electricity
  • Lawn darts with elongated tips
  • Prohibited firearms
  • Vehicle airbags and airbag covers
  • Sodium azide
  • Sodium nitrite and sodium nitrate for non-food uses
  • Padded crib bumpers and similar accessories, including vertical crib slat covers and top rail covers
  • Face masks intended for use by infants
  • Toy crossbows that have the capability of shooting small, sharp projectiles (such as toothpicks, pins)
  • Laser pointers: Laser pointers are generally not allowed on Amazon. A laser pointer is a pen-shaped pointing device (usually powered by a battery) that contains a small diode laser that emits an intense beam of light. Handheld laser pet toys and 303s are considered laser pointers. There are four classes of visible-beam lasers [none of which are allowed on Amazon]: Class 2, Class 3R, Class 3B and Class 4.
  • Infant-inclined sleep products:
    • Framed-type-inclined sleep products
    • Hammocks
    • Compact-inclined sleep products, including, but not limited to Nap Nanny brand infant sleep products
    • Accessory-inclined sleep products
    • Infant-inclined sleep product replacement parts and accessories
  • Elephant sleep pillows
  • Fidget spinner lighter knives
  • Child neck floats
  • Scalar quantum energy products
  • Drop-side cribs
  • Military gas masks
  • Polar pens
  • IMDEN brand magnetic building tiles
  • Motor vehicle fabric restraint systems
