Disclosure to the Rhode Island Department of Revenue
EMAIL received from Amazon today:
Under a new Rhode Island state law, Amazon is required to disclose to the Rhode Island tax authority the following information about sellers who made sales to Rhode Island customers in 2017:
Seller contact information (name and address).
To comply with this obligation, we plan to provide your information to the Rhode Island Department of Revenue by February 15, 2018.
Because each seller’s business and tax needs are unique, we encourage you to consult with a tax advisor to answer any questions you may have. You also may refer to the following seller resources:
Solution Provider Network: a directory with information about several experienced tax advisors.
Tax calculation services (sign-in required): optional services for calculating U.S. sales and use taxes.
Thank you for selling on Amazon.
Sincerely,
The Amazon Services team

Sounds to me like Rhode Island is going to start taxing individual businesses and assessing fee for selling without a permit. Anyone talk to a tax specialist about this? That’s a slippery slope of registration fees…

It sounds to me like Rhode Island is going to start collecting sales tax from sellers in other states. Washington State already does this. This is a terrible trend. The federal courts are looking into this also. It looks like they might lift bans on interstate taxing.

I think it is time to quit selling on Amazon all together. Too many worries for very little return.

Just wondering why sellers are notified after the year is over… ??

I am not going to collect sales tax for RI. How can I opt out of RI sales?

For me, Washington’s sales tax is added onto the total amount; I don’t have to do anything at all on my end. I’m actually OK with that.
I am not located in Washington, and I do have to pay sales tax for items ordered by people who live in my home state. I simply file the printouts separately, and deal with it once a year because I’m a low-volume seller.

Is there a report on sellercentral showing customers bought my product in which state?
